Throughout this video, Martin Yan discusses how
wonderful he believes the San Francisco Chinatown is, how it brings together
past and present, how the neighborhood has so much character. Yan shows how it
is not just a tourist destination for most people. He begins by showing the
audience how a market prepares pork in a traditional way used before
refrigerators to keep meat from spoiling. Yan then shows a store owner's
chicken farm with a variety birds and how the store owner will actually sell
live birds for costumers to take home. Next, he discusses the importance of
fresh ingredients in the Chinese culture, so it is a critical part of
Chinatowns. Yan continues to show the variety of what is sold in Chinatowns by
showing all the kitchenware that is also sold. Yan then goes to dinner and
shows footage of how the food is prepared.
The video’s tone and location changes
as Yan begins a segment resembling a cooking show where he prepares drunken
shrimp soup, delicious beef with many mushrooms, and five flavor chicken with
eggplant, and while making these dishes, he uses different cooking techniques
he learned from his experiences in Chinatown.
